1880 Census-Mom and I think this is Andrew for a variety of reasons.
Marshal BAKER Self M Male W 36 KY Farmer KY KY
Barbara BAKER Wife M Female W 45 NC Keeping House NC NC
Martha J. SHELTON SDau S Female W 15 TN At Home NC NC
Andrew SHELTON SSon S Male W 17 NC Farm Laborer NC NC
Henry SHELTON SSon S Male W 12 KY Farm Laborer NC NC

Reason #1: The age is close. The census taken could have erred. (You wouldn't believe how often this happens!) OR the transcriber could have mistaken the 9 for a 7. Reason #2: This census was taken at Stinking Creek where Malinda Mills family was from. Mom remembers Mammaw telling her that Andy was alot older than Malinda. Reason #3: Also he was a stepchild and his mother moved around alot. According to the census information, Barbara was born in NC had Andrew there, Martha J. was born in Tn and Henry was born in KY. I checked the 1900 census and Marshal Baker was married to another woman and had another stepchild. This could account for Andrew's jealousy and harshness toward Malinda as I discussed earlier.

G grandfather Charles Spurlock (?1802-5/15/1869 in Lee Co. Va.) b. Sullivan Co.TN F/O Richard
G grandmother Jemima Kirk Spurlock (? 1810-? Between 1850 and 1860) b. Va. M/O Richard. Her brother’s name was Richard Kirk and he was a preacher in the Lee Co. Va area. Several Spurlocks moved to Claiborne C. TN ca 1840-1850 and this family probably migrated at this time. He and Jemima were in Harlan Co. by the time of the 1850 census. Children of Charles and Jemima were Elkanah, Sally(Sarah) Ellen, Salina, and Susan or Susannah, John William, Richard, Alexander, and Patton(M.P.).

GG grandparents Willis and Susannah Harris Kirk-Lived in Lee Co. VA-Parents of Jemima Kirk Spurlock

GG grandparents William and Elenor (sometimes spelled Eleanor) Spurlock-Lived in Sullivan Co. TN at one point and both were found on the 1830 Lee Co. Va. Charles probably didn’t marry Jemima until after 1830 in Harlan as he was on the 1830 Lee County, Va. Census as was his mother Eleanor.
*William probably lived in Russell Co. Va in 1795 (name found on deed).

Elijah Shelton

These twins are Tiki and Greg's uncles who are buried in the Jarvis Cemetary.

William Shelton

Our grandmother, Bernice, got a double tombstone when William died. Then she decided she wanted to be buried in Cumberland Memorial Gardens instead of Jarvis Cemetary. Her side was used when Uncle Mark passed away with the addition of this bronze plaque. To me this was a very wise thing to do.

Lucy Ellen Shelton

Child of Bernice and William Shelton. Many babies did not survive being born at home.

William Shelton-Death Certificate

I cannot figure out for the life of me who would have access to this death certificate and would put it on the internet. Strange... Click on the picture for a bigger copy. Much more information I haven't had time to filter through can be found at this website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~kyknox/Knox-County-Home.html

Bright Shelton

Bright was the oldest child of William and Bernice. He died in the flu epidemic, I believe. This grave is also in the Jarvis cemetary. They were bold about naming their children in the past. People didn't seem to be afraid of what little Johnnie would think about his name when he grew up. We've lost so many interesting names because of the desire that our children "fit in".

Malinda Shelton

This is Malinda Mills Shelton, wife of Andrew. She was the daughter of William Henry and Eliza Mills. The birthdate on this stone is incorrect. She was born in May of 1874 (per 1880 and 1900 census). I'm wondering if whoever replaced the stones thought both parents were the same age for some reason. (See below) Our grandmother, Bernice Spurlock Shelton England, loved Malinda. She told my mother, Martha, that Malinda was good to everyone. She caught strep throat and died. Mom said she had beautiful hair and would sit in the sun when she washed it to let it dry. She would sit and brush it to make it shine. Anyhow, Mammaw said that's what caused her to get strep throat.

From 1880 Census Household: (I think this info was answered correctly by the respondent due to the exact age of the baby).

Andy Shelton

This is located in the Jarvis Cemetary on 229. This stone has been replaced. His actual birthdate was March of 1861 (per 1900 census). Andrew was the father of William, Elijah, Johnny and Jimmy (twins), Victoria Hinkle, Mary House, and Martha Blanton... and husband of Malinda Mills. They were married 8/20/1888 in Knox County, KY. I do not know who replaced these stones and why the wrong birthdates were used.
