Clark Mills

Clark "Big Clark" Mills, b. April 17, 1817 in KY; d. August 28, 1891 in Knox Co., KY was married to two sisters of Harrison Taylor. Clark was married first to Sarah Taylor who died during childbirth in 1850. In 1851 he married second to Sarah's younger sister, Margaret Taylor. Clark disappears from record prior to the 1860 Federal Population Schedules, US Census of Knox Co., KY, and re-appears by 1870. Perhaps Clark Mills listed in Marion Co., KY, might be the same Clark. Some of his children later went to live in Orange County, IN and also married there in that county. Clark Mills, wife, Margaret, who was born in 1832 and had these children - Sarah, Silas, Permelia or Amelia, William Henrey, Brice, and Mary.1880 Federal Population Schedules, US Census, Knox Co., KY, page 108A, listed Clark Mills as the head of the household. He was age 62, born in KY, a farmer and listed that both of his parents were born in NC. Margaret was age 45, and born in KY. She was keeping house and listed that her father was born in VA and that her mother was born in KY. Children listed were all born in KY. They were listed as Margaret, a daughter, age 21; Brice, a son, age 21; Anthony, age 16, a son; Amanda, age 12, a daughter; China, age 12, a daughter; Thomas W., age 4, a son. Back to Old Nasby Mills...

Esther (Haddock) Mills, wife of Nasby Mills, was a sister to Charles Haddock, Sr. Charles married Penelope "Penny" Mills. And Nasby Mills was a brother to "Penny" (Mills) Haddock. [Their children were double cousins.] Nasby and Penelope "Penny" Mills were among the children of Anthony Mills of Craven Co., North Carolina.

Malinda's mother was...

Melinda's mother was Eliza Jane. Eliza was actually Elizabeth. Her father was Thomas Hardy.
1860 Knox County Census:
Thomas Hardy Age 27 Born Knox County
Betsy E. Age 25 Born Knox County
Eliza Jane Age 6 Born Knox County
Nancy Age 2 Born Knox County
John Age 1 Born Knox County

Thomas was the son of William Hardy-- age 54 in the 1850 Knox County Census-- Born Tn(?) in this census, but born NC in 1860 census.
He was also the possible son of Laney Hardy age 35. No other wife for William has yet been uncovered but one is suspected due to the age difference. In the 1850 Knox county Census, Thomas is 17. Other children in the family are Nasby (no doubt named after Nasby Mills) age 14, Sarah age 12, John age 9, William age 7, Clark age 5 and Elizabeth age 1. The family lived two houses from Clarkand Sarah Mills.

William was the son of William Hardee Born 1796 in Craven Co. NC. He died in 1829. He was married to Martha Elaina ?.

William Hardee was the son of William Hardee of Craven Co. NC. He was born in 1766 and died in 1829.

Andy Shelton-1900 Census-Newcomb Precinct Laurel County KY

Name: Andrew Shelton

1880 Census-Mom and I think this is Andrew for a variety of reasons.
Marshal BAKER Self M Male W 36 KY Farmer KY KY
Barbara BAKER Wife M Female W 45 NC Keeping House NC NC
Martha J. SHELTON SDau S Female W 15 TN At Home NC NC
Andrew SHELTON SSon S Male W 17 NC Farm Laborer NC NC
Henry SHELTON SSon S Male W 12 KY Farm Laborer NC NC

Reason #1: The age is close. The census taken could have erred. (You wouldn't believe how often this happens!) OR the transcriber could have mistaken the 9 for a 7. Reason #2: This census was taken at Stinking Creek where Malinda Mills family was from. Mom remembers Mammaw telling her that Andy was alot older than Malinda. Reason #3: Also he was a stepchild and his mother moved around alot. According to the census information, Barbara was born in NC had Andrew there, Martha J. was born in Tn and Henry was born in KY. I checked the 1900 census and Marshal Baker was married to another woman and had another stepchild. This could account for Andrew's jealousy and harshness toward Malinda as I discussed earlier.
